Hi,

My old laptop's graphics chip broke and it was integrated so I couldn't just replace it. I had to buy another laptop as soon as possible for work and the best I could get where I live, in Laos, was one with an Intel Core Duo Mobile T6500 2.1 GHz CPU. My old laptop now has a perfectly good T7500 sitting idle in it. Can I just take it out and put it in the new laptop?

I've looked up all about them and they both say they have the same socket as far as I can tell but I'm not sure. Can you usually just remove a CPU and add a new one?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hello to Laos!

If you could give us the model name of your new laptop, it would be great for checking.

Hello from Laos!

The new one is a Compaq Presario CQ35 226 TX with a Compal 306D motherboard and Socket P (478). The old one is a no-brand laptop and had a Compal FL90 motherboard. I can't check the socket information since the graphics chip's gone.

I am right in thinking that even a professional can't change an integrated graphics chip? A shop in town, where the bloke certainly looked and sounded like he knew what he was doing, said he could do it but that it would cost $154 so I was hesitant...

Thanks for your help.

It should work. T6500 and T7500 are both socket P, and have 800 MHz FSB. T6500 is a Penryn 45nm part, and T7500 is a Merom 65nm part. Your motherboard has PM45 chipset. Intel doesn't show CPU support for Merom processors for this chipset, but this chipset does support 65nm CPUs in some notebooks. I suspect it will support T7500 in your laptop too.

Thanks Gennadiy.

I'll give it a go. Just got to work out how to get to the CPU now, it's not exactly obvious as it is with the RAM and hard disk!

Do you know if it's possible to just replace the integrated graphics chip on my old Compal FL90 PM1 motherboard?

That would require desoldering by expert hands, and would need parts for replacing.

Could be expensive (being Laos you could maybe find it cheaper but probably not worth it).

Gennadiy expressed my concerns about cpu support, but trying isn't going to kill anything and worst case you put the 6500 back in.
With the 7500 you get extra L2 cache, could come in handy...

Good luck and don't rush it, all the pieces should get off with little force. Check on youtube, maybe someone already tried opening those laptops.

I think most integrated graphics chips are soldered on the motherboard.

Otherwise it wouldn't be "integrated" Wink lol

[All the "guest" posts are mine btw.]

Barns, let us know if you could put the 7500 in.

Compal FL90 does NOT have an integrated graphics chip! The graphics card is an Nvidia 8600 GT and it fails due to the heat. It can be replaced with an AMD 3650 512mb mobile graphics card for about $80 and this can be done, if you are careful, quite easily. There is a guide to doing this here on the notebook review forum.

I have fixed 3 so far like this. The Compal FL90 is a brilliant, robust laptop once the graphics card has been replaced and can be upgraded for both processor and Ram. Mine is 6 years old and still going strong. Smile
