Evening, all.
I did a silly thing the other day. I'd had the case open on my Compaq Presario PC, to remove the case and CPU fans for a spring-clean, and re-lubrication.
Having got them all clean, everything went back in, and I powered her up. I have an Athlon 64 running in a Socket 939 fitting; she's about 10 yrs old, but with XP having been put out to pasture, I'm running Linux on her now. I'd had to remove the 4-pin plug that supplies power to the CPU, in order to reach the plug for the heatsink fan.
On power-up, the fan was running flat out, and nothing was happening. 30 seconds later, I realised what I'd done, and did a hard power-down. I'd forgotten to plug the CPU power lead back in...!
Everything appears to be running OK, but I simply want to find out from those who know better than me.....have I done any long-term damage?
Regards,
Mike. _________________ Life is what you make of it.

No, having too little power was why it didn't boot. That won't harm anything. _________________ My graphics card database can be found at http://www.gpuzoo.com.

Thanks for that, debs. I suspected that was why it didn't boot, but I just wondered if it might have caused other complications...

| No harm at all. The 4 pin plug simply provides power to the processor. Without that plug, the CPU simply had no power. |

Hi, mavroxur.
Oh, that's OK then.
I haven't yet got around to rebuilding the old girl, by the way. When you last advised me about the MSI replacement board and the AMD A6-6400k back in March, I was still running XP. And it was getting SO slow...
I've since switched to Linux (Ubuntu 14.04) back at the end of May. It's given the Athlon a new lease of life, so I'm probably going to run it until the caps pop. It's working (a LOT faster than it used to), it does EVERYTHING I want it to (AND more besides)... In fact I'm running SIX different OSs at the moment; seven, if you include the one on the flash drive...
And Linux suits me; I'm a born 'tinkerer', so I can play around to my heart's content!!!
