I have an old HP vectra 500 w/ a pentium 166Mhz cpu. The oldest ver. of windows I have is '98 and it will not finish installing on it. I know it's not really worth keeping but, I don't want to throw it way. I'm intrested in insalling Linux on it but there are a million difer ver. of it. Any suggestions.on which one and how to install it after its been downloaded and burned to a cd as an "iso" file.

ps. Brand new to Linux

Well, if you are new to Linux maybe you can try it before you install it. Knoppix (http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html) allows you to run Linux from CD without installing it. And if you really want to install it I'd recommend Red Hat or SUSE.

Nay, that wouldn't work.
Knoppix is way too large for a P166. I boots into KDE desktop and you will get it REALLY slow. Sad
As to RedHat, I wouldn't recommend it at all, it had been the most popular distro some time ago, but really, it is crap. Evil or Very Mad
SuSE is great, but again you will need to use some other window manager, like Fluxbox of Xfce, they are small and fast.
If you want to get a really quick system, you can try to install Slackware. But you'll need to read tons of documentation to make it work as you want it to.

You're right, I forgot that BabyD49683 wants to install it on Pentium 166 box.
