My guess too, looks similar to those used in early SUN systems - and there they were cache chips.

This chip was used in Macintosh II video card, so I guess it's some kind of CRT controller or something related to video.

You're right,

I mixed it up - Sparc IPX workstations contained three socketed PGAs, CPU, Cache and Video Processor, normally the Cache was a LSI and the Video was a SUN GX but the LSI chips with L1A prefix were Video Processors, also used on SBus cards.

l1A prefix is pretty generic. Pretty much means in ASIC from LSI.

Do you know how much junk I'd have if I kept everything that I had that was worthless... just to see if it *maybe* went up in value in 20 years
