Thanks for the informative article.
I just started collecting and I find your articles interesting. What I've been wondering is the disparity in prices from seemingly identical CPU's? For example, I was looking at one sale and it had this:
(2) ADA3200AIO4BX - $8.00 each
(1) ADA3200DAA4BP - $3.00
So after looking at both, I can see that they are both AMD Athlon 64 3200+ with venice cores, both manufactured using the same process tech., same data width, same number of cores, and same cache sizes. The only difference is the socket, the stepping code, and clock multiplier. I'm just wondering what makes one more special than the other and how one figures this out?
Thanks. |

| Athlons for socket 754 are signifucantly less common and worth more. |

| If it wasn't condition I might theorized its was due to the sellers acquisition cost. One maybe came in large lot thus cheaper per item maybe. |

$8 is a bit newer and faster, but I would value them the same. pricing though sometimes reflects what the seller paid for them though too. _________________ New for 2025! The CPU Shack has a co-processor!

Is this something you just knew or did you find out somewhere?

| I wikipedia'd socket 754 and it did say that it was replaced by socket 939 due to low sales in the desktop market, but for a noob like me, that point alone wouldn't have specifically caught my attention. |

I don't know exact numbers of course but 754 was short lived
and you can find common Athlons like 3000+/3200+ for 939 much easier than for 754.
Try to search e.g. this forum's "For Sale/Trade" threads. |
