|
|
Come across this today and is real weird. I must have handled 1mill+ Nehalem EP chips before but never seen one without any sort of marking. Is a fully functional E5520.
Anyone seen something like this before ? Please shed some light |

Diamond paste and liquid metal will both take away markings. |

Who in the right mindset would use any of them on a low spec chip in a server ? |

| Maybe this wasn't used in server but overclocked on X58 board instead. I may also have to sand markings away to get better contact with heatsink because those Xeons run so hot when overclocked and overvolted. |

It does look like authenic Intel finish (not polished/sanded/liquid metal).
And it's very strange choice for overclocking (very low base frequency).
I think Intel just forgot to do laser etching. |

What's the scan result of that QR code ?
Does it contain an ATPO only ? |

Not strange at all - back in the days, before spending all the time on kids and work, I usually bought the lowest (or almost lowest) speed of a given architecture and overclocked |

I dont know why there are no markings.
But if this is from factory , i can take a wild guess ?
They were short on server cpu's
They had stock on Mac Pro cpu's
So they installed in a hurry unmarked heat spreaders for a specific period or order.
edit
Other than that , their robot just failed to make the print. |

But i7 920 was $100 cheaper and had 20% higher frequency |

| I bought a couple of unmarked Skylake-X (LGA 2066) cpu's off ebay a while back, they look similar in that the heatspreader is completely blank, but has no other information on it.. |

Benchers don't care what the original frequency is. They care about percentage of overclock. |

Do you try them in motherboard? Are they both working samples? |

Unfortunately i don't have a LGA2066 motherboard available so i haven't tried them.. I do recall reading a thread somewhere that they are 10 core Skylake-X or something like that.. |
