|
|
Hi all
I have just completed my first build, which seems to have gone fine. I bought an AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Newcastle, or so I thought.
Whilst testing the system out with Everrest, it tells me that the CPU is AMD Athlon 64 3000+ (ClawHammer-512 s754)
Can anyone tell me if this is just another name for the Newcastle? Have I been short changed by the retailer or is the Clawhammer a better CPU than the Newcastle?
My MOBO is Gigabyte GA-K8VT800.
Thanks |

Thanks
It looks like I do have the Clawhammer. Am I right in thinking that this is a slightly lower spec than the Newcastle?
I guess what im asking is should I send it back and get them to change it for the one that I ordered, namely the Newcastle |

ClawHammer has slower core, but larger L2 cache (1MB in ClawHammer, 512KB in NewCastle). Depending on application 1 MB ClawHammer may be faster or slower than NewCastle. There are also ClawHammers with 512KB L2 cache - these have the same core speed as NewCastle. Because your motherboard says ""ClawHammer-512 s754" I suspect your processor is 512 KB version.
BTW, Check the core revision of the processor. I've heard recommendation to avoid C0 revision of ClawHammer.

Thanks gshv
So are you saying that they are both the same? The L2 cache on the cpu I have is 512kb and the core version is CG (I think…I’m not at that machine at the moment)
Should I just keep this cpu or do you think I need to return it? |

It depends on whether you want to overclock it or not. If you're not going to overclock it then performance of your chip should be the same as NewCastle, and there is no reason to exchange it for NewCastle. If you're going to overclock it then it's better to check overclockers sites - NewCastle may overclock better.

...just one thing tho...
------> If your anything like me that is(picky!!!).
I like to receive what I paid for
Ya to me , "they" short changed you because the Newcastle is slitghtly more expensive(maybe not by much) but still...
It leaves me with a suckered feeling when that happens...
Kinda like if I did'nt know what was what in a pc store.
Just my sayings...
