My oldest AMD board has a Regor 2 core with clock speed noted at 2.713
from a benchmark program.

If the main task of the machine is dedicated to video editing for home use,
would such as as Phenom 4 core with 2.3 clock as a used item be worthwhile or even practical?

Operating system is Win7 Memory on this AM2+ board is 2 Gb.
I used the CPU World Upgrade forum to search for the highest compatible CPU for this old board as bargains emerge.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/AMD-CPU-Phenom-X4-9650-2-3GHz-Socket-AM2/183205410766?epid=74100558&hash=item2aa7e4b7ce:g:SY0AAOSwcgNZK1ZD

The Phenom is in the $12.00 range for this tweak.

I would definately go for more memory for that purpose. At least 8 GB if possible?

EDIT: Is it 32 or 64 bit Win7?

Ok, a DDR2 1066 is the highest value the old board takes and
with 2 slots. I'll see what turns up on the sales unless you have a special tip for it.

the OS is Win 7 64.

Thanks for answering.

You'll want to check the specs of the specific program you intend to use, but video editing programs are typically good at utilising all available cores, so all other things being equal a quad core processor at 2.3Ghz will outperform a 2.7Ghz dual core machine.

There seems to be two opinions now. I suppose I can check with Doom9 or
someplace on the video. It's not something I've ever investigated since the
rig in question is older than my video editing practice. Usually with Handbrake and other free tools.

I'm back on this topic after a lot of confusion about memory in trying to follow the advice about more mem vs new cpu.

The board info I have says that mem speed can be 1066 but maximum mem is 4 gb for the two availabe slots-- two only on the baord.

Does this preclude something larger such as 4 gb or would it not be recognized in some way? Would a lower clock speed of the mem have any
implication on performaces or compatibility?
