Hi all

Got an AthlonXP 2200 in my machine. Clocks up 1.8GHz (Nice seeing as a friend gave it to me for nothing - certainly an improvement on what I had) but I have to ask; why doesn't it hit 2.2GHz like it's rated/advertised at?

I also have an AthlonXP 1700: 1.46GHz instead of 1.7GHz. Same question - why?

Prior to that I used an Athlon 1300 and also a Duron 1300. Both of these clocked in at their rated speeds of 1.3GHz.

Whats with AMD's AthlonXP's? - Is it some advertising con?

Does (Dare I say this word?) Overclocking bring them up to speed?

Thanks

AMD Athlon core is more efficient than Intel Pentium 4 core, i.e. AMD processors perform better than Intel processors when clocked at the same frequency. This is why AMD introduced "rated speed", which shows the speed of comparable Intel Pentium 4 processor. So, your Athlon XP 2200+ performs as Pentium 4 2200 MHz when it's actually clocked at 1.8 GHz. Older Athlons (up to 1.4 GHZ) didn't have rated speed. They're always faster than Pentium 4s running at the same speed (with the exception of heavily SSE optimized tests).
