|
|
A while back I had list of compatible cpus from CPUWorld or another
source.
Just lately I got one of the (I think) last of the MSI 760 GMA 34 FX
motherboards. It is sold as new other with 180 day warranty and looks
ok with all the backplate etc and OEM installer disk
It is an AM3+ board.
I thought I had the right (pre used) cpu to at least check this board
and ran into a bent pin problem. It is a Phenom CPU which looked ok
before insertion.
Ok for my woes about that. I retrieved it from the parts to take to
the recycle shop to inspect the product number.
It is
HD 8450 WC J3BGH and dated 2006
If you can tell me that CPU was not a match I will be relieved since
I don't really know any problem with the board as defective.
I did apply power briefly and I realize there's a warning about that from the MSI company. |

Your Phenom 8450 x3 is AM2+ and only supports DDR2 memory.
Your MSI board does not support it.
It will physically fit in the board but it will not post or boot with it.
You probably did no damage to the board. |

thanks for prompt reply. I guess I was thinking of backward compatibility.
At least I don't feel like the goat for a bad installation setup.
One other thing. You don't show an update to your good/bad ebay dealers since 2016 (?)
I'm wondering if there is a recommendation to get some sort of AM3+ before stepping up to one of the FX class which is my goal. And a good but very inexpensive source. Rather than used is there a remaindered or close out source available?
My Ryzen buy is some time off yet. |

E-bay
For your board, I would look for a Phenom II x4 955 or 965, at a price that is affordable to you. |

I'm new to the details of cpus and so have an additional question or two on getting the Phenon ii 955 etc recommened above.
My older AMD cpus say 'fused in Germany and made in Maylasia. I recall years ago discussion of where the "good" locations of manufacture are.
On the Ebay they show trays full of various Phenoms etc from China.
Is there a CPU World preferred or recommended way to get a good Phenom free of errors and in US? I'd hate to have to try to return something
over seas. |

| You have an AM3+ board, but not any FX-series CPU? Those work much better than your Phenom. |

I investigated that but the data sheet I made from CPUWorld info only shows the Phenoms up to x6.
If you have a list of FX for the board mentioned it would be appreciated.
Thanks for making a reply to this old thread. |

Negative.
Most Phenoms kill FX in everything. Except power consumption and heat output. |
