Hi,

Looking to join the Nx586 owners club Smile - waiting for Nx586 VLB motherboard + P-90 CPC-101 + NxVL kit to arrive.

Hence, I am looking for some details/help on the following:

- what are the Nx586 CPU models supported by Alaris Nx586 VLB motherboard?

User manual states 80/90/100, but are these the CPC-101 or it includes CPC-102 models?

- any chance the motherboard supports the Nx586 with FPU (the PF/PE models)?

- from owners of Nx586 - what is the highest frequency Nx586 CPU used&tested on this motherboard?

- tips and tricks to keep in mind when building the Nx586 rig
* I collected a few resources already from the forum thanks to feipoa and High_Treason, searching more in the forum history
* is there a dedicated forum for Nx586 users you can recommend?
* same on drivers/tools availability availability

Thanks, vm

Both VLB and PCI boards supports all Nexgen versions and speeds.

Edit: I havenť tested PF version in VLB motherboard. I thought someone told me here on the forum, but I didinīt find it, I also went through my private messages.

So I take my claim back and apologize. Embarassed

Are you sure PFxxx are working on VLB board too ? I have not tested it yet but I remember there were some issues. Please correct me if I'm in wrong.

I was also under the impression that PF models don't work on VLB Nx586 boards. Perhaps someone with can confirm via a test? Too risky for me.

Came across few more posts suggesting the PF models only work with PCI boards due to specific pairing:

https://web.archive.org/web/20041225072514/http://www.cpu-museum.de/forum/viewtopic.php?t=463

https://web.archive.org/web/20050109110238/http://www.sandpile.org:80/post/msgs/20003354.htm

https://web.archive.org/web/20050109110242/http://www.sandpile.org:80/post/msgs/20003355.htm

Anyone can confirm the PF pairing with PCI MBs, and the standard P models with VLB MBs?

I can only confirm that FPUless version works well in the PCI board, I tested it a year before.

Also thereīs no mention about PF version in VLB motherboard user manual.

Thanks misace, any chance to test PF model on a VLB board? Or is it a risk of damaging any of the two?

I have put one working CPU with big heatspreader to VLB board and it doesn't damaged mobo or CPU but it couldn't boot on different jumper configurations.

The VLB motherboard manual states:

Supports NexGen Nx586 P80/P90/P100 microprocessors with 32KB internal cache

Marcin - can you confirm the CPU big heatspreader you tested was P110 or P120?

I confirm what was written 15 years ago. For CPU with FPU, the PCI motherboard is needed. My tests did not damage my CPU.

Sorry for late answer but I missed that thread. Most of non-marked big heatspreader are P90 models. Like vinicio said those with FPU integrated needs PCI mobo for sure.
