|
|
I'm hoping someone can answer this, to save me potentially killing Windows (again).
I'm running an AMD A8-3870K APU with 32 GB DDR3 @ 1333 MHz. It's supposed to run at 1600, but I haven't trier that since I updated the BIOS a couple of days ago. The old BIOS failed to boot, saying overclock failure, when I tried to run the memory at the rated speed.
In Windows 10 x64, I set the pagefile to 10 GB, and put it on the boot drive (SSD) (yes, I knows that's not good for an SSD).
I am watching a video, transcoding another, am running Folding@home on my GPU, have 51 (yes FIFTY ONE) tabs open in Firefox and 19 in Chrome and have a couple of older apps that use virtually no memory. Task Manager says that I am only using 51% of available memory.
When I switch tabs in either browser, it takes up to 20 seconds to load the tab, which should already be in memory. It takes as long as if the pagefile was on an idle IDE drive which had to spin up.
Could this be related to having too much or two little pagefile? Can the pagefile be safely shrunk to a bare minimum, and might that speed it up? If it is using the pagefile, it seems rather odd, given that there are several GB of free RAM.
Only other thing I can imagine is that maybe Firefox and Chrome are not well enough written to cope with so many tabs. If it's that, I guess I'll have to make a web page with all the links on it and substitute that in as my home page. Seems like too simple a solution though
Any suggestions will be gratefully tried _________________ My graphics card database can be found at http://www.gpuzoo.com.

I honestly think is down to Firefox and Chrome. Does the same to me after a few days without restart. Tried it with small (8gb) page file, with large (100gb), same.
And my spec is a bit different as well, 2 x E5-2697v2, 192gb of 14900R, 8 x 1.92Tb SSD in Raid 5 and 2 x K4200 Quadros (no there's no use to it, really just a "why not " config ) |

They do force me to reboot every few days. I'd have a similar spec to you if I didn't have a nasty habit of spending beyond my means _________________ My graphics card database can be found at http://www.gpuzoo.com.

Don't have this problem with Chrome, on Widnows 8.1.
I currently have one chrome with 64 tabs and the other one with 30.
Switching to tabs is instantaneous or so.
Pagefile is set to default value (20GB), I have a Intel 540 180GB SSD and I have "only" 16GB of RAM (DDR3-2400).
35% of Memory is used. Cpu is a E5-2680.
Aside from Chrome, I have excel, photoshop, thunderbird, notepad++, filezilla & Sketchup with a big 3D model.
Computer is on for 40 days & 20h without reboot...
So, I don't think this is due to Chrome alone... _________________ Register on x86-guide.net to manage and share your collection on-line !

You can also try to turn off the pagefile and see if the browsers react quicker.
Did you also try running Prime95 or PCMark or some other stress tool?
Or is the annoying windows defender active? |

Not doing so, on the other hand, kind of defeats the purpose of having an SSD.
[But I moved it to a HDD too - my old 60GB SSD is just too small to contain it...] |
