Hi,
I am about to sort my processors.
Starting with the 80186 family I came across some things I
do not quite understand.
1. Chips are often labeled 80186-x where x is the frequency.
This seems true to me in most cases (-6,-10,-12 etc.) but I doubt
its true for -3. I found a reference this would be 8 MHz - can
anyone confirm that ? Is there an official source that helps on
such questions ?
2. Some chips are just labeled 80186 without any extension.
What is the frequency there ? Is it 6 MHz because in the beginning
there were no faster 186s ? Is it dependend on the model ?
(80186 vs. 80C186 vs. 80C186XL, EA etc.)
3. I came across two chips with almost the same labels
R80186-10 and R80186-10C.
Can anybody tell me what the difference is ?
Thanks

Yes, "80186-3" is an 8 MHz processor. "-3", "-1" and "-6" suffixes were part of an old naming convention. Later it was changed to use different prefixes ("R" instead of "C" and "N" instead of "J") as well as to show real processor frequency.

Datasheets usually have this information. Aad Offerman's chiplist has some information:

It's an 8 MHz part.

I think both 6 and 8 MHz versions were introduced at the same time. BTW, 6 MHz version was introduced as "cost effective version".

I don't know about 80C186, I don't have any documentation on it. As for 80C186XL, EA, etc this information should be in the datasheets. Did Intel even produce 80C186XL or EA without suffix?

I have no idea, I'd like to know it too.

Thanks so far,
so
C80186-3 is 8 MHz
C80186-6 is 6 MHz
N80186 is 8 MHz
C80C186 is 8 MHz
R80C186-10, 12, 16 is what it shows
N80C186 is 8
N80C186-8, 12, 16 is what it shows
A80C186-16,20 is what it shows
- right ?
The only thing that really confuses me there is that no postfix,
-3 and -8 stands for the same frequency.
My XL, EA etc. versions do all have a MHz-postfix.

I have had a look at chiplist before.
The 186/188-information looks uncomplete to me as far as
EA/EB/EC versions are concerned as I have the datasheets
from intel as a second source which includes other models
as well.
For earlier 186-versions I do not have the datasheets and
chiplist is not very helpful there:
| Quote: |
Intel i80186 CPU: 6 MHz, NMOS.
Intel i80186 CPU: 8 MHz, NMOS.
Intel i80186 CPU: 10 MHz, NMOS.
Intel i80C186 CPU: 10 MHz, CMOS.
Intel i80C186-12 CPU: 12.5 MHz, CMOS.
Intel i80C186-16 CPU: 16 MHz, CMOS.
Intel iM80C186 CPU: military (-55 - 125 C), 10 MHz, CMOS.
Intel iM80C186-12 CPU: military (-55 - 125 C), 12.5 MHz, CMOS.

This basically tells me for plain vanilla 186 one doesn't know the
frequency.
On the other hand I do have 186-3 and 186-6 chips.
Still confusing.
