From BBC Technology News:
Russia considers 'unplugging' from internet

The test is also expected to involve ISPs demonstrating that they can direct data to government-controlled routing points. These will filter traffic so that data sent between Russians reaches its destination, but any destined for foreign computers is discarded.

Eventually the Russian government wants all domestic traffic to pass through these routing points. This is believed to be part of an effort to set up a mass censorship system akin to that seen in China, which tries to scrub out prohibited traffic.

This might be sad news for our Russian friends. d'oh! Silenced

The world has gone crazy! This ancient isle that I live on will be separated from the world soon as well, and it is the poor and sick who will suffer most. I'm shocked by so much that is happening around the world. Why can't people just get along? We don't have to be clones to be nice to each other.

Grr, I better stop typing, I feel a heavy political rant coming on Smile

This is a little wrong.
The Russian government does not want to disconnect from the Internet.
Other country governments want to disconnect Russia from the Internet so that Russian news cannot be read in other countries because these news are different from those that go through local news channels.
Now in Russia they are testing the possibility of preserving the operability of the Internet inside the country in case of disconnection from the global network.

It's all very bad Sad
I hope this does not happen.

cpu80 correctly described everything.
If people listen to the BBC, CNN and some more, they can decide that terrible things are happening in Russia. But it is not.

IMHO at the present time, all the people of the earth must learn to distinguish between propoganda and actual facts.
It is better to draw conclusions from communicating with each other directly, rather than listening to those who make money on mass media information.

ya mean people who make money on the news might manipulate it to make more money regardless of the facts? Unheard of! (sarcasm lol)

The News in America portrays Russia as the great satan hell bent on taking over the world, and meddling in everything from Star Wars movie releases to elections, mostly through KGB run youtube comments...

..They also gleefully appreciate all the terrible drivers in Russia and all the dashcams so we can have (probably KGB sponsored) compilation videos of crazy crashes in Russia

Personally I just want to sell CPUs to my Russians friends, and find super cool old SOviet ones and eventually visit LOL

PS: Should I bring a dash cam?

Ask those who have been to Russia. For example at the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
...... Fans have ordered a total of over 1.8 million Fan IDs. Most of the fans' passports were ordered by citizens of Russia - 980 thousand, in second and third places - citizens of China (67 thousand) and the USA (52 thousand). Significant groups of fans came from Mexico (44 thousand Fan ID obtained), Argentina (37 thousand), Brazil (35 thousand), Great Britain (31 thousand), Colombia and Germany (30 thousand each), Peru (27 thousand .).
On the eve of the tournament, the British media and representatives of the authorities recommended that the British not visit Russia and refuse to go to the World Cup, explaining this with alleged provocations of Russian fan movements. In fact, British fans and journalists who came to Russia were pleasantly surprised by the friendly and open atmosphere in the country. At the beginning of the tournament, more than 18,000 fan passports for British nationals were registered, but during the championship this number increased by more than one and a half times. This indicates that people got rid of the prejudices they might have, and came to support their team .......

The best way to check it out - see it yourself.

John, you can come here at any time and all together we will meet you with the Russian community of collectors of CPU World!

Welcome!

I have friends in Russia and have also done business there and have been there 9 times over the last 20 years and had a great time during all of my trips there. The Russian people are very warm, friendly and welcoming and I look forward to my next trip there soon.

But most of my Russian friends have either already left Russia, or are planning to leave there soon, because they can't stand the government there anymore and they're sick of being lied to constantly and used as pawns in Putin's chess game of murder and greed.

It's sad that a country with a great people, a rich heritage and immense natural resources like Russia is being held hostage and plundered by gangsters and thugs.

And what's even worse is that now Putin is spreading his influence even wider with each passing year and he even helped to elect a racist, con artist and wanna' be strongman here in the USA as well.

Well, there's a world between what some politicians on both sides of the Russian border want to do, and what they can and will do. For example, rich people and companies from both Russia and the West are cooperating and earning serious money by working together, be it because of gas/oil, transnational companies (several big bank and supermarket chains in Russia are French, for example), or just rich people stuff, like rich Russians buying property abroad : https://tranio.com/articles/russian-and-cis-overseas-commercial-property-buyer-report-2018/

If you ask me, the real danger isn't somewhere at the Baltic-Russian border, or not even in the Donbass, you guys should rather check what's been happening at the Indian-Pakistani border during the last few days...

I'm perfectly aware that there's a war in the Donbass, but what I'm saying is that I don't see it escalating into a bigger conflict. It's going to stay hot for as long as one of the parties isn't bored of it, but it's not going to flare up and be the spark to ignite the Third World War.

In Russia, very soft laws and for this, officials steal from the people, and people steal from officials. In prison, as a rule, no one is thrown Very Happy

All you need to know about the Russian Internet is that it is moving towards the Chinese Internet model.

We must say hello censorship and private VPN
