| First time forum user; Can an AMD duron 700(Spitfire) be upgraded with a duron 1300(Morgan), if so are any tweaks required? |

It all depends on your motherboard. With newer motherboard you can just plug it in, with others you will need to upgrade the BIOS, and some motherboards don't support it at all. What is a model of your motherboard?

There were many Compaq models with different motherboards, so knowing that you have Compaq is not enough to determine your motherboard.

Yeah, we'd need like maybe a specifc model number. Not just something like "Presario 1700" as there are many different models within that. For example, I've got a Presario 1700 laptop somewhere back home (there oddly was also a 1700 desktop line), but the model is 17XL360. Whole slew of Presario 1700's out there in a variety of flavors.
With a model number we can possibly find out tech specs.
Note too, replacing a processor can be delicate, especially one with an exposed core. You may also need thermal grease - AMD's retail heatsinks come with what's called a phase change thermal compound. It's a solid, waxy square that melts around the CPU core to ensure good contact with the heatsink. But it's only good once - as soon as you remove the heatsink, it needs to be cleaned off and replaced with something else.
Good place to start |
