I see this piece of tape on many old Intel chips:

What is it and why is it there?
Is it just a pillow to prevent the chips from touching each other when they are in the tube for shipping? Or there is other reason for it?

Thanks for any info on this. |

Thats exactly why its there
help prevent ceramic chips from breaking in the tube (seen many many damaged ones from that) _________________ New for 2025! The CPU Shack has a co-processor!

good question, Coleco!
I had wondered about that
btw, tape on TOP of chips is most-often covering the window of an eprom [eraseable programmable read-only-memory] to keep UV light from erasing the info written there
other tape on top can carry info the user needed
sometimes over the manufacturer/model info
below is a screen shot of a NASA GSFC (Goddard Space Flight Center) board where almost all the chips have tape on them identifying specific tasks for NASA |
