Well, this is a good start.
Recently had to buy parts for a replacement PC when my motherboard died. I just took the power supply out of the mATX case as the new MoBo is too big. Only put too much pressure by accident on a sata cable, and wrenched the connector off a 3TB drive! That's 2.5 TB of video files I am going to have fun trying to recover (and I think that makes 4 drives I have killed this year!).
Here's to a better 2020 _________________ My graphics card database can be found at http://www.gpuzoo.com.

That would be great if anyone has the skills. I have a few donor drives that a connector can be taken from _________________ My graphics card database can be found at http://www.gpuzoo.com.

Just a thought. I have an identical drive that had a SMART failure. Would the PCB from that be worth swapping? Buying a suitable torx bit would be the cheapest solution if SMART failures are mechanical. _________________ My graphics card database can be found at http://www.gpuzoo.com.

If the drives are all the same model and firmware revision, a board swap should work. _________________ My collection |

Thanks. I'll see if I can get to a hardware shop this week to get the right torx bit. _________________ My graphics card database can be found at http://www.gpuzoo.com.

| But wouldn't the SMART error follow the board? All though being related to the actual disk, you might risk not being able to read that sector, the SMART controller thinks is bad? |

I decided I am going to try and find my soldering iron (haven't used it in over 10 years, so it could be anywhere) and sacrifice a sata cable, breaking one end to solder the connectors to the drive. At least that way I can save the data. It'll probably be Feb before I can replace the drive, but I can hopefully at least get it ready before the new year, and it is guaranteed to work. Cables are cheap enough to sacrifice one _________________ My graphics card database can be found at http://www.gpuzoo.com.

Debs,
I have a soldering station and would be willing to solder for you, if you can't find your soldering iron..
But fist I'd need to see some pictures of the two items to be soldered. A few close ups from different angles would be helpful so I can see if it's do-able.
