Actually, P2 has 512K cache vs. 128K on Celeron, but at half the speed.

The P2 333 is better than the Celeron 333 (because the Celeron's were cheaper than the P2)

Definitely the P2. Back in the early days i've swapped my P3/450 to a Cel666 which ran at 1Ghz. Guess what? The old P3 was faster in many ways...

Seems like an incredibly simple question? The celeron is a cut down form of the Pentium.

Is this a trick question?

Sorta.

The celeron actually will perform faster in a couple tasks.

The celeron has 128k of on die, full speed L2 cache.
The Pentium II has 512k of off die half speed L2 Cache.

So if running taks that reference a very small portion of memory (such that it is 100% cacheable, the celeron will out perform the PII

so would the faster cel cache outweigh the lower amount of it?
this computer would be running a speed tweaked XP, and would be used for email, skype, and basic internet. im building it for my grandmother so she may not need a huge cache on the cpu.

The Pentium II will probably always beat the Celeron in normal usage. However, the Celeron 333 should be highly overclockable to 400 MHz or more, which would give it the performance edge.

Yea the Celeron can be clocked quite high. I have clocked a 333mhz to 416mhz. Dont know if it can be pushed any higher, hit the maximum fsb on the motherboard.
