Hi All,

So, if I get it right, some of the Deschutes PII's are using T6P and others T6P-e tagRAM? This should result in different cacheable amount of memory of 512MB or 4GB respectively? Is that correct?

From what I can see with certainty is that the following processors exist with both configurations:

Deschutes 266
Deschutes 333

But what about 300?

And are all 100MHz FSB the T6P-e flavour?

Thanks,

So, a necro-post seems suitable, since I recently thought about the fact that P2 were available both with 512MiB and 4GiB cacheable range - but does it even make sense, as very few mainboards for P2 supports more than 512 MiB (or 1GiB at most) or am I missing something?

This old Tom's Hardware article indicates that all 100 MHz FSB Pentium II's have the T6P-e (82459AD):
https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/overclocking-special,94-2.html
Quote:
The combined L2 cache controller / tag RAM chip used together with Klamath chips on PII 233 - 300 MHz used to be the '82459AB'. This chip could only cache up to 512 MB of memory, so that those Pentium II CPUs could not run with more memory than 512 MB. The first Pentium II 333 CPUs came with the '82459AC' L2 cache controller/tag RAM chip, which can run at higher clocks, but it is still only able to cache 512 MB. Later the PII 333 and all faster PII CPUs (350,400,450 MHz) were equipped with the '82459AD', which is not only able to keep up with up to 225 MHz L2 clock speed, but it can finally cache up to 4 GB of memory. Intel's internal name for the 82459AD is 'tp6e'.

It also says early on the 333 came with the 82459AC and later versions got the 82459AD.

Another source I found says the following:
Quote:
On the Pentium II, the 82459AB and 82459AC
cache controller chips can cache up to 512MB of RAM. And the 82459AD controller chip can cache up to 4GB of memory. The older Pentium II Klamath chips come with the 82459AB controller and the initial Deschutes chips (6-5-0 step) come with the 82459AC cache controller, and therefore can only cache up to 512MB.

So, if the source is correct, that would mean all dA0 stepping / 650 CPU ID Deschutes CPUs came with the 82459AC tag RAM, which has the 512 MB limit, and all later models came with 82459AD.

PII 333
512 MB: SL2KA, SL2QF
4 GB: SL2S5, SL2QH, SL2TV, SL2WY, SL2ZP

PII 300
512 MB: none
4 GB: SL2VY, SL2W8, SL2YK, SL35V

PII 266
512 MB: SL2K9, SL2QE
4 GB: SL2W7, SL33D

This would confirm your theory that there are no 300 MHz Deschutes CPUs with the 512 MB cacheable limit.

Some more proof of lower clocked Deschutes CPUs coming with the 82459AD tag RAM:
https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/overclocking-special,94-2.html
Quote:
The second fact is that the SL2W8 comes with the 'tp6e', the fast 4 GB L2 cache controller / tag RAM.

Some more investigation may be required to confirm each S-Spec for certain.

Yeah, got most of my knowledge from that article at Tom's Laughing

I was actually planning on doing some benchmarks to see what difference it made to use one with 4gb cacheable range vs. one with 512 mb. But it seems not to matter, as most PII chipsets doesn't support more than MAX 1gb - and that needs to be registred SDRAM.
