LGA775 mod, better xeon than X5482?

Hello there

Merry christmas to all,

I have been using a LGA775 modded Xeon X5482 with my Gigabyte EP45-Extreme, 8Gb of dual channel DDR2 and a GT730 graphics card, with a 3.5Ghz overclocking

Any idea of a better LGA775 or LGA771 CPU that I could fit in there to squeeze some more juice out of my old computer?

X5470 has a higher clock speed but a slightly slower FSB (1333 vs 1600). The X5492 is all-around faster but it's also 20W higher on the TDP and ridiculously overpriced when you find one.

The QX9770 would be arguably faster than the Xeon with overclocking (since it has an unlocked multiplier). I see you're already overclocking, so you're well aware that Xeons can OC with just FSB increases. I Used to run an X5460 @ 3.4 (base 3.16) with no issues.

Personally, I'd just stay where you are. 3.5GHz on your chip is pretty good and will put it on par with any slightly faster chips that are out there for 771. You're already at the upper end anyhow.

Thanks a lot, it confirms my doubt, I've seen the X5492 and it is really overpriced as you say... probably because this is the first one in the list regarding speed

I'm not really worried about TDP as I have a big Zalman, but it is starting to be a bit noisy and before swapping heatsinks I thought it would be a good idea to check for a better CPU at the same time

I could probably up it a bit with some better RAM but it is already some Kingston PC2-6400 in dual channel so not that much to do there...
