I have a pcb from old (not ancient but pretty dated) electrostatic air cleaner for hvac and initially the transformer caught my eye since it looks pretty different from others I've seen. This board converts AC to 6kv dc with what looks like a 1 stage multiplier on the left. Learned a lot about some new parts looking at this... varistors were new to me. And that bobbin on the bottom right has no core/magnetic....so I was scratching my head at what that one was.
There are 12wires running to the transformer, and its clear to me that it's got a primary, feedback, secondary, two taps (?) To an led and the other 4 are probably similarly taps. There's text that says something about neon bulb but I didn't see one in the unit when I pulled it, so maybe one was previously scavenged before I got it.
This is probably just a standard transformer from 30 years ago but I haven't found anything online that looks like it, except the replacement board from that vendor. At one point I had this crazy thought that this could be an AC output Flyback but I don't have much to base that on besides limited knowledge on flybacks having feedback coils.... But if it really is one that would be pretty cool since I read they are rare.
This old stuff fascinates me and I love how the board and parts are coated in this plastic spray shield..... Made it super easy to rinse off . And the solder balling is perfect on the high voltage spots which was a nice guide for improving my side project - 100kv 10 stage ion ray gun. |
