Max1024 was inspired by the mere site of the B52 (I suppose its name is thus fitting)

Nice stuff!

You might wanna mention, that the colors in the B52 logo, are the colors of the Italian flag (not surprising)

Further more, I recall having read somewhere that lower clocked PIIs (and Katmais) tend to have less wait states/latency (or something like that) on the cache. This could explain why the B52@450 was faster than PII@450. This might be verified by testing a Deschutes-300 up against a Deschutes-450 downclocked to 300 (as overclocking the 300 might prove hard) ..

Added a bit about the Italian flag Smile

The later version of the cache tag on the 300s they used maybe helped too

This article outlines some stuff about latency on L2 Cache on Pentium II

Quote:

The BIOS can tell a right PII 450 from an overclocked PII 300 SL2W8, even if the L2 cache chips and the L2 cache controller are the same, and it initializes a PII 450 completely different to an overclocked SL2W8. So does a PII 450 give you a L2 cache latency of '8' and a latency mode '02', whilst a SL2W8 at 450 MHZ with the very same external chips gives you a latency of '3' and a latency mode of '00'.
