I have a few ebay "rescues" that ended up being dead or mostly dead.

AMD Ryzen 9 3950X ES 100-000000033-02 - POSTed once, then never again... Still not sure what allowed it to work that one time.

Pentium 75MHz ES Q0649 (serial number 0001) - Chipped corner, doesn't POST. Sad

Core 2 Extreme QX9770 Q3YN and Q9PM - Don't POST at all...

Tragic, but maybe not a complete loss. Looks like the die might be intact if you want to do a die shot.

I had an old SPARC like that. Was able to successfully delid, and die was intact. Got some nice pictures.

Depends on time, risk appetite, and available tools.

Butane / crème brûlée torch - Fast, higher risk. Especially on cooldown.

Heat gun with adjustable temp - moderate speed, moderate risk. Can delid most CPUs with heat spreaders at 600-1100F, but contingent on bonding material.

Convection / broiler oven. Slow, lowest risk, limited temperature. For anything with solder (including silver tin solder) this works well. A solid 5-10 minutes at around 500F. I’ve been doing this to delid ceramic gold chips without issue in most cases. Don’t use one that you plan to ever use again for food. I was fortunate enough to get a used one for free, and it has been handy.

The convection oven has the added benefit of being able to cool more slowly, reducing likelihood of fracturing the ceramic or die.
