Hi.

I started to decap some ICs I have. mostly to practice.

This one I burnt it down. I think I just got lucky

SR2JK (Intel Core i5-6267U) this is one of the CPUs from the donor boards i have. Im trying to apply heat but it s harder to remove the lid. should i treat the seal first chemically?

one of the AMDs I have a box full with bent pins. It was going great but I rushed it and it broke. Probably i have to apply more heat to the heatsink`?

This was actually my first, by accident. it came from a military board. the IC was so thick. I pressed too hard with my thumb and luckly it did not damage the IC. does someone recognize it?. I remember the Device have several cards in pairs. so Probably there is another one.

I try to use my scanner but it sucks in resolution. its great for scanning large quantitis of CPUs since i has a bed size A3.

Any suggestions with flatpacks? just heat? I like those 3dfx ICs as my next victims.

I use a combination of heat guns and convection oven for plastic or fiber CPUs. If you don’t care about the substrate, put the heat gun near or at max (1100f) and after a minute or two, you can bend the fiber away from the die with pliers.

Plastic epoxy chips will get stinky around 500f, but can be relatively easily broken open with smaller pliers
To extract the dies inside.

Ceramics will usually decap after around 5-15 minutes at 500f. It’s easy to leave them in the oven and they get constant temperature. Heat gun requires more active work, and it is easier to contaminate the die with solder.

Want to remove the die from the ceramic? That’s where the butane torch shines. Possible with a heat gun and a lot of patience and luck.

I do all my work outdoors and with a 3m respirator with VOC filter. Gloves recommended and use clothes you don’t plan to wear around polite company. It’s quite an odour.

Aberco has a nice video on YouTube that makes an excellent starting point for heat gun use.

Thanx!, yeah I noticed the odour as I extracted some ceramic CPU out of some boards. I used the heat gun instead of the tin extractor. its much faster, but yeah the smell.

“ Dissolution in boiling dimexid”

Did not expect to see that as an answer!

How did you come to the conclusion it would work? And what kind of precautions are needed for whatever vapour comes off that?

The technology is simple, but flammable and harmful. I really have already dissolved more than a thousand chips and transistors. It's probably possible to describe it, but everything can spoil the translation from Russian into English, which I don't really know.

Photos can be viewed in the auto-signature

If you have a chemical laboratory or a garage, then you can probably repeat it. If you will definitely do this, then I will write and show you.
