Hi,

Looking to max out my Core i7-920 build with memory to the maximum 24 GiB. I'm considering buying 8 GiB modules, but all motherboard manuals I've looked at, states a maximum of 4 GiB per module. Is this just because 8 wasn't available at the time it was compiled, or does the memory controller have this limit?

Thanks,

6x8GB modules should work just fine.

Oh and ditch that ancient 920 for a used Xeon.

Thanks, had a good shot at some 8GiB sticks - just checking now that they're not SODIMM Laughing

I have a 965 lying at AVICC, and hopefully a 970 in negotiation as well ... Smile And probably also some Xeon - I just lost overview Laughing

I've used 6x 8GB unbuffered memory on both Bloomfield (i7-920), and Westmere-EP (Xeon X5670), in a Asus P6X58D Premium

It must be the fact that 8 GiB modules didn't exist at launch, that makes Intel state 24 GiB max and several motherboard manufactureres states 4 GiB per memory slot max.
