Pentium G5400 -> Core i5-8500 replacement? (SOLVED)

Afternoon, guys.

One of my rare visits! Just a query, really....

Seemingly, more & more software devs are now beginning to require the presence of the AES/AVX instructions in order for their creations to run. I've had an HP desktop for the last 4-5 years, with a Pentium G5400 CPU.

Core processors have had the above-mentioned instructions for several generations, apparently since second-gen, but the G5400 doesn't possess these, despite being Coffee Lake-S, eighth-gen. So; doing some research, LGA 1151 gives me several options for Coffee Lake-S.

Am I right in thinking that the Core i5-8500 would be a more or less "drop-in" replacement? Refurbs for these are quite reasonably-priced on places like eBay ATM. Chipsets are what I'm unsure about; you guys know your subject better than I do, so.....what's the consensus here. Would this work?

Any advice will, as always, be very much appreciated. TIA.

Fair comment. My bad; I moderate on a couple of forums, so I ought to be aware of the importance of such details!

Well, despite being a Linux-only user, the CPUID tool runs OK under WINE. I've submitted a couple over the last few years, so here's one of 'em:-

G5400 is a coffee lake CPU, same as the i5-8500.
i5-8500 has a slightly higher TDP but I imagine whatever board is in your system should be able to handle it.

I'd anticipate that you should be able to swap out the CPU without issue.

Assuming HP doesn't do anything retarded with their BIOS like locking out certain CPUs, that i5-8500 should work.

Mm. Okay; that's what I was thinking myself. Just out of curiosity - and bearing in mind that y'all know a darned sight more about this stuff than I ever will! - do you have any recommendations for a suitable Coffee Lake-S i7 on LGA 1151.....with a similar TDP?

The reason I ask is that this HP Pavilion mid-tower comes with a weird, low-output slimline PSU of only 180W. You can't upgrade it for love or money (not without buying a bigger case and replacing everything else as well.....and that is NOT in the budget ATM). This is rather typical behaviour for HP, unfortunately, though I can't complain 'cos it runs well.

My Nvidia GPU is an Asus GeForce GT710, and only pulls 19W from the slot.

Any suggestions for that power envelope, please? How about the i7-8700 - this is also LGA 1151, Coffee Lake-S and around 65W; would it, too, be a "drop-in" replacement?
