What is the maximum processor I can insert ?
I buy i7-820QM (BY80607002904AK) 988-pin micro-FCPGA8 (rPGA988A) Processor core Clarksfield, but the laptop did not work. Maybe a broken processor?!Does the Clarksfield and 45w core support my chipset?

You might be stuck with the dual core parts on that system.
So that'd leave you with the i7-640M as the fastest dual-core you can find. _________________ My collection |

And there is no way to bypass the two-core limit and put four cores? |

The Core i7-640M.

The schematic for your VAIO shows that it only supports Arrandale - https://www.laptopserviz.bg/media/catalog/product/g/d/gd3-mb-evt-0601c_01.jpg

I don't see a BIOS update program located anywhere on the web for your VAIO, so the only way to modify the BIOS is to extract it from the BIOS chip with an SPI programmer. Then, you need to check if the microcode exists for Clarksfield in the BIOS with MC Extractor. If the microcode for Clarksfield doesn't exist, that could be the reason why it doesn't boot. In this case, you need to add the microcode into the BIOS with a hex editor, and flash it back to the BIOS chip with the SPI programmer. If it does exist but doesn't boot, I suspect the motherboard's VRM isn't able to supply enough current to power up the 820QM. The other possibility is the APIC table doesn't recognize processors with four cores, but I don't think it has the ability to prevent the system from booting up if that was the case. |

One more question:
Intel HM57 support i7-820QM (BY80607002904AK) ? |

The HM57 chipset supports all Socket 989 rPGA processors, it has no limitations. The problem lies with the motherboard, if it doesn't:
• have a BIOS containing the microcode for Clarksfield
• have a BIOS with 8 'Processor Local APIC Structure' entries
• have a VRM capable of supporting Clarksfield's power requirements
• have a dedicated graphics chip connected to the internal or external display
Then it isn't going to work. It's a matter of the motherboard's design, not the chipset itself. Laptops that fulfill all of these requirements are not common, the only one that I'm aware of which can boot both Arrandale and Clarksfield with the HM57 is the ProBook 6450b/6550b. |

| No. The VAIO VPC-Z13S9R can only boot with Arrandale, not Clarksfield. |

I Have Asus X301A Laptop Socket rPGA989 chipset Intel HM76,
i3 -2350M 2 Core, 4 Thread, 35W and 1X8GB DDR3L Ram (only one slot available). But according to rPGA989 max support i7-640M with integrated graphics. I believe because chipset Intel HM76 supporting Ivy Bridge CPU's. So my question is it possible to upgrade to i7-3632QM 35W, i7-3612QM 35W Quad-Core? If not What is the best CPU I can upgrade max? |

Your X301A uses Socket rPGA988B, not Socket rPGA989 or rPGA988A. They're different and are not electrically compatible.
Yes, both quad-core processors that you mentioned will work. |
