Well, everyone needs help sometimes, even me, so here's my question(which I really should know the answer to ).
I've still got my Athlon 2600+ Barton with the 333fsb.(CPU).Knowing they do make one ,2600+ with a 266fsb...
...anyways, my Motherboard is the FIC AD11.
It only supports up to 1.3ghz CPU.(266fsb).Now, I've tryied using my 2600+ knowing it's ok to underclock things from time to time ,but I ran into an issue with this one:
XP will not fully load-up!
Oh and trust me I've change all the other hardware(excluding mobo and chip) just incase
1.Is it the Bios that's corrupted/bios virus?(should I bother to update it?)
2. Is it a controller failure on the board itself?
3. Is it the chips underclocking issue that confuses the whole thing up?
EXP--->Chip is clocked at 1875mhz with board set at max :150mhz fbs(with no 166mhz fsb available).
I will try another chip I'm going to have in my hands later today (Athlon 1400+). If XP installs on this chip, then I'll have all probs solved. But I need to have an idea in here just incase it does'nt work
Thanx in advance,
Glin

| You'll probably find its something to do with that wierd FSB. Try setting the FSB to 133Mhz and see what happens. Also if you want to use that wierd FSB make sure the PCI/AGP bus lock is on. Otherwise without the right dividers you will be screwing up your PCI/AGP bus. |

Your chip is underclocked, but your mainboard and RAM are highly overclocked ! You should set the FSB to 133 MHz and try again.
There is another big problem - Most mainboards with FSB 133 (266) don't support the barton processors. There is big difference (not only higher FSB) between the barton and thoroughbred cores. You could try to update the BIOS, but I doubt it will help.

The fastest FSB 266 Thoroughbred CPU is Athlon XP 2800+
Such CPUs do exist ! I am using one of them in my computer. (I have a Athlon XP 2800+ AXDA2800KV4C with unlocked multiplier )
Perhaps you should buy similar CPU. |

Actually, My ram is 2 sticks of PC3200 DDR400(400mhz) 512mb with heatsinks.
So my ram can handle the heat
But ya, as for the Barton theory in most motherboards(at 266fsb) not being able to support it, I can see why now.I will try putting back the clock to 133(266fsb) but like you said, I don't think it will make a diff.
I'll come back and post a result of more testing later on......
Keep the info coming everyone, and thanx!

Results from tests :
Yup, tuning down the FSB to 266 was good, XP loaded fine but, I'm only getting my 2600+ at 1.43ghz ! D'oh !!! I need minimum 1.7ghz to play FB2 !!!
When I try overclocking after XP is loaded, same errors happen, so I guess the answer is obvious, to get a lower grade chip(2200-2400).
2200+ Athlon XP =1800mhz(1.8ghz) would be sufficiant for BF2.
but a 2400+ Athlon Xp=2000mhz(2.0ghz) would be better
And like above, maybe even a 2800+(266fsb)? Funny it's not in my book?
My tables are :
...
2400+(P-rating) 2000(Actual speed/mhz) 266(FSB)
2500+ ..... 1833........ 333.......
2600+...... 2083...... 266 * and 333
2700+...... 2167....... 333
2800+...... 2250........ 333
3000+........ 2167....... 333
3200+......... 2333...... 333

I did find a small review on your "unlocked 2800+".... Ya they do exist but extremely rare!!! Which causes a problem for my and lack of time

I dont know whether you have on that motherboard but look for something called PCI lock or PCI speed in the BIOS. If you bios has one set it to ON or 33Mhz.
Then you will be able to raise the FSB without it affecting the PCI/AGP cards.
Also try a little more voltage to the CPU under the higher FSB. |
