Or were they basically a paper launch? I can barely find any non-stock pics of them on Google.

This TPU article states they started selling in Japan. Given how insular Japan's internet presence is, they may well be out there, just difficult to search for. A quick search on Yahoo Japan auctions didn't find anything, but that doesn't mean much.
