|
|
I got my hands on a CPU labelled as an Intel Pentium Extreme Edition 980 ES, the chip itself only has writing in sharpie, with the name and the clock speed (4 GHz.) the CPU works fine, and does indeed run at that speed. I can't find any information or even a mention of this thing online.
Core Speed: 4008.73 MHz
Multiplier: x 15.0 ( 12 - 15)
Bus Speed: 267.28 MHz
Rated FSB: 1069.00 MHz
Anyone know any information about this thing? Or where I should potentially record some info on it?
Can't provide a picture of the CPU itself atm, as it's in a pc. |

the cap arrangement is the same as the other presler-based extreme editions. Extremely nice find!
There were always rumors of a 4GHz model that never saw the light of day. This is likely one of those. _________________ My collection |

This sample is extremely strange because :
- Intel would never use a "Pentium D" string on an early sample based on a XE design (Genuine Intel is expected here)
- The handwriting doesn't watch any known "legit" handwriting ES from this era. "PSLR" is not how they called it internally and E0 stepping has never come to light. Stepping on CPU-Z is D0.
- The packaging serial shows that it has been manufactured in the same batch than many known ES sample of the regular Pentium 4 EE 965 (https://hothardware.com/photo-gallery/article/796?image=big_cpu_1.jpg)
I will do some investigations on internal databases.
A very interesting test would be to boot this cpu at 14x multiplier. The PNS could change accordingly. Some ES samples have the PNS read-only fuse not blown, leaving the BIOS program it at boot time. _________________ ES-Only Collector : http://www.engineering-sample.com

Unfortunately I don't think the motherboard supports changing the multiplier, there isn't a setting for it anywhere in the bios _________________ My Part Collection |

The Maximus Formula is a board designed for overclocking so it should definitely have a setting to change the multi. The manual might have more info? _________________ My WTB List

In the manual for the motherboard, there is CPU Ratio Control, that option does not exist in my bios _________________ My Part Collection |
