I would say it is the other way round: The Zilog Z180 is a clone of the HD64180!
Zilog licensed the design from Hitachi and added two control bits to achieve even more Z80 compatibility (to mimic undocumented Z80 behaviour that some Z80 applications made use of).
Obviously, the license allows Hitachi to use Zilog's enhancements and to use the Z180 name, because soon after the appearance of the Zilog Z180, Hitachi dropped the HD64180 and also produced Z180s. |
