|
|
I'm interested in collecting a handful of vintage processors, and I'm thinking about building a simple wall mounted case to display them in. It's basically just going to be a frame with a flat back, and I'm going to put labels under each processor with info about them.
But my question is what do you guys think is the best way to mount the processors to the back of the wall case? I thought about hot gluing them, but I don't really want to destroy the processors, either. Do you guys have any good ideas for that? Or do you have any better ideas on how I could display them on a wall? I'm only using like 8 key processors for this display. |

| It depends on which CPUs and what packages. Options for lightweight chips could include double sided tape, blutac or magnets. A PGA or DIP model culd be pressed into foam and you glue the foam to the board. A Slot PII might need a supporting board under it or wires that run through the board or heatsink. Hope that's enough to get you started, but if not some detail on what your 8 or so chips will be will help. |

try to get hands on sockets and glue the sockets. that's the safest way. using foam can damage pins (within decades but it does) so it would be necessary to replace the foam every 10 or 15 years lol _________________ You may use the photos I have posted here under CC BY-NC-SA license. |

Thank you! I thought about the socket thing. Can you get your hands on sockets without having to buy a whole motherboard? Plus, what about the really old ones. Like I want to go back to the Intel 4004. I just assumed those were soldered?
If I decided to go with foam, what kind of foam do you use for that? I've seen pictures of CPUs stuck in foam, but I'm not sure what it is.
Edit: Cuttingedgecs, sorry I didn't even see your post until after I replied. These are the processors I'm thinking about. If you're wondering why I chose some of them, a couple are just sentimental value.
Intel 4004, Intel 8008, Intel 8086, MOS Technology 6510, Intel 80386DX, Pentium 75 MHz, Opteron (SledgeHammer), Pentium D. |

4004 was DIP socketed. These kind of sockets are very easy to come by from anywhere you can buy electronic components.
As for later motherboard sockets, look around and see if you have a local metals recycler. Chances are that they also deal with electronic scrap. Ask them if they'd be willing to sell you "Large socket motherboards". You can get sockets this way. |

Thanks, man. I was looking around, and I can get all the DIP sockets I need really cheap. The later sockets are going to take a little bit more effort, though. I don't really have anyone who would have that kind of scrap near me. I live in a small rural city without much around me. But I've been able to find most of the motherboards with the sockets that I need for not a ton of money. In some cases on ebay, I found some motherboards that come with the processor I want, anyway. I guess I'll have to somehow remove the sockets from the motherboards. But I agree that's probably the best way to go about it.
Thanks for the help, everyone. |

Maybe you can ask here around for the sockets you need. maybe one has plenty and can send some cheap. would save cost when buying lots of scrap boards just to get sockets.
I colect and have only the very old stuff so my sockets end with DIP packages;-) _________________ You may use the photos I have posted here under CC BY-NC-SA license. |

Cool. Well, just to put it out there: I can get the DIP stuff cheep. But what I would need would be a Socket PGA132, Socket 5, Socket T, and Socket 940.
If nobody has anything, I'll figure it out, but I'll put that out there, like you suggested. |

| Found an eBay seller who has at least socket 8 and 5. Sent you a PM with link. |

Do you use ZIF sockets or regular? |

for display purposes of DIP chips I use regular sockets. for valuable chips I remove the metal parts and put the chips in the plastic only. that's not very tight but not necessary in display mode. the advantage is the pins do not get scratches.
Nullkraft sockets are ok as well, I just do not like how they look lol |

Hi I bought a display case and hung it on the wall 😌
I can't insert links as a guest.
You can find what those showcases look like on YouTube.
