It's very rare. I've seen it once or twice in the past 4 years.

We need to distinguish between rare, and not seen / uncommon. Just because something has not been seen before, it doenst always make it rare - even taking into account as cpu collectors we are more "aware" of chips.

How many of you have seen these chips below? are they rare to you or uncommon -- these are not on this site's database...

SX518 DX50

SX547 DX50

there are more, I'll go though my 486's later.

"rare, and not seen / uncommon".....
Good idea.

I have the same two.
The only DX-50's I have so far.

486DX2-40 ceramic are very rare. It is the first one I see. And from Intel Website, only SQFP 486DX2-40 are mentionned...

I would rate it 6 on my rarity scale (from 1 to 6)...

Can someone explain why they released this production CPU for a very short time (or made very little?)

My DX-50 is SX710. I've seen SX547 on eBay, but I've not been aware if I saw the other one. I'd say they are uncommon Smile

I agree with what you are saying about "rare" vs either "unseen" or "uncommon". Too many chips are described as rare, both here and on eBay. If I believed everyone that says this chip or that is rare, then I'd have my collection insured for more than the house I live in is worth Smile

Quite.....

"rare" seems to rings $$ signs. Fools and their money.

Intel does not have complete information on the web. They never conceived that people would be mad enough to collect chips?

It has been said before that rare to one person is not rare to another. The only relevant ( and interesting) scale, is the "known chips". This may be a good suggestion for the cpuphotolibrary.. instead of having a subjective scale like "rare", a count of known chips might be better - has this been mentioned before?

I agree with JAC, we need either a count or a scale with other processors of "defined" rarety to make a good judgement. Numbers are just so subjective.
