This is wonderful news. I have been hoping for some time that AMD or Intel would venture into the graphics market. Even the most up to date graphics cards such as ATI's x1000 series are made on out of date IBM fabs. This merger will mean that ATI's will be made on modern AMD fabs. I think we can expect faster graphics chips that finally run cooler. Lets not forget this positions AMD in a market in which it does not have to compete with the vastly larger Intel which uses its weight to engage in the illegal coercion of other market players to the end of the exclusion of AMD from the box system market.

My only concern is that this will strain AMD's relationship with Nvidia. This relationship has been quite profitable with regards to the Nforce chipset line which has finaly put AMD on equal footing with intel with regards to robust and powerful chipsets to compliment their processors. AMD would do well to beaf up ATI's chipset division imediatly or they may be left out in the cold. We all know ATI chipsets are currently not all their cracked up to be.

Wonderful news for Intel, certainly. AMD might actually be cutting its own throat... Right now they should be focusing on what to do about Conroe, and instead they'll be mired down in merger-related nonsense.
