Ok, I got a laptop that came with Windows XP Pro right. I am very annoyed when there is pre-installed programs on my system. so I was wondering if I it illegal to install a different copy of XP Pro on my laptop but then copy the registry info for the OS to my fresh copy. I only have a recovery disk with the laptop but my own XP Pro.

So here's what I'm going to do=. I'm going to take the Windows NT registry info and export it. Then back it up of course. Then I'm going to install my own copy of Win XP Pro. Then the I import the Win NT registry info. As long as I'm using my own OEM product key on the system it came with it should be all legidiment rite?

My laptop I got with pre-installed system too. At start I formated disk from uneeded software. My system is on DVD recovery disk. You have it too. I don't remember exactly how I installed but that is possible to do manual without stupid idiot-user installation Laughing Good luck !

I always wipe the machine out and reinstall XP. The key on the bottom will work with a new install. You may need an OEM XP CD though for the key to work, not sure. I have both XP Pro and Home with SP2 slipstreamed on CDs, ready to go.

well, of course, this would be typical of me to say, when i get a laptop with XPee on it...i wipe it all clean and put a nice fresh slap of my favorite Linux.

But, about your question if its illegal, i'm not sure, i mean, i htink each box of winxp you buy has one license for one computer, so theoreticaly your only allowed to install once, but, eh, wth, they stink anyways, i'd do it, not like Gates and his team of lusers will show up at your door.
