Hello, Very Happy
I'm new to this hobby of collecting CPU's. My question is: how can I safely remove processors from the motherboards they're installed on without damage to the processor (and Mboard if possible)?

Also, some CPU's I've collected have the heat sink glued on them. How do I remove this without damaging the chip, or markings on the chip?

Thanks in advance for your time!

Hi!

For removing heat sinks, take a look at this forum entry at cpu-museum.de
http://www.cpu-museum.de/forum/viewtopic.php?t=224

Usually, the scredriver/knife method will work (insert and rotate the device).

Good luck!

The best tool for this is a chip puller. You can get it for cheap at your local electronics store. But normally a skrewdriver or a knife will do as well. Insert it between the chip and the socket and gently lift the chip for just a few millimeters. Go to the opposite side of the chip and repeat. Don't lift it too far or the pins might bend. Just lift a little bit on each side of the chip until it gets loose.

Freezing them can help weaken the glue on heatsinks as well
