Picked this little diamond up.

It came from an old boy who used to work at IBM when it really was the superpower in computing.

I think i have seen something similar on the site before - I am just real glad to have one for myself.

He had some interesting stories to tell about he way they used to make memory (when testing they used PIANO WIRE).. etc.

Nice find! That's actually a fairly recent core memory plane by IBM standards (1970s). Here are a couple from the preceding decade:







Speaking of piano wire, there were also magnetostrictive delay line memories that circulated bits around a spool of wire in the form of ultrasonic sound waves:





It's amazing what engineers came up with before semiconductor memories were cheap and plentiful.

Check out this page for a simple guide to core memory.. I didnt realise a read was destructive.. hehe.. read then write. Kinda like double clutching, in a very tenious way Very Happy
