Neither of my chips 387's have an es marking after the datecode. I also notice that yours has no speed marking which supports your cause.

seen production parts with dates of 9222, 9220, and 9217.

Yours is 9149, which is much earlier.

I think it is likely a true ES.

i own a chips J38700DX 25 mfd 9136 without ES ("9136 A JAPAN" and produced 13 weeks earlier than yours).

interesting, the ones I looked at were 33's and 25's
