|
|
Hey guys, I picked up a 3.06Ghz socket 478 processor for cheap on ebay. The auction listed that the product was being sold As-Is with no returns. I figured I could take the hit on the price if the processor ended up being defective.
Well the processor arrived on Monday and when I tried to drop it into my motherboard it wouldn't fit. After comparing my old processor with the one I purchased I noticed the pin setup was off by one pin. Usually socket 478 processors have two pins missing around pin 1, well this processor has two pins missing but in the wrong direction.
I'm no expert on processors but I do know enough that all 478-pin processors should have the same pin layout right? Well I scanned the processor so you guys could take a look at it and hopefully give me some help. Here are the pics...
If we make any progress we can discuss what I have found based on what the missing/extra pins do from the processor documentation found on intel's website.
Just for referance, this is what a typical pin layout for a socket 478 processor looks like (this is how the pins are arranged in my old processor).
Thanks in advance for all your help guys. |

| Printing looks strange to me. I thought P4's were made in Malaysia? |

uh oh
judging by the resistor layout it is a Mobile Pentium III Tualatin core CPU
they share the same pin count as Pentium 4 but of course cannot be fitted in
may be you can remove the metal cap to see? |

Markings look fake. Intel's native markings on many desktop Pentium 4 processors are difficult to read, and use different font. I think this is a mobile Pentium III-M.

The 2-D Matrix mark is in poor condition, I suspect this has been remarked for sale to people to make a chance purchase. You are maybe a victim of fraud |

Sure looks to me like someone buffed the markings off an intel heatspreader, put some new text on it, and slapped it on a P-III mobile. I find it a bit baffling though. Usually with fakes the idea is that the processor will function in the victims computer whether at the remarked speed or not and no one will catch the switch. This one won't even fit in the computer though. It is quite a franken-chip and must have taken a great deal of time and effort to concoct. Might be worth your purchase price just as an oddity provided you didn't pay much. It's like the jackalope of chip collecting |

the guy who made it probably thought it would be cool to have a P4 chip in a P3 laptop, but it's weird because no one would be able to see it if he were to show it off... _________________ http://www.RareCPUs.com

the Heatspreader is correct to my knowledge...
China did dupli Intel's contract..A few exemples are the P4 Prescott 3.4gb Pic#1
Allthough the P4 3.06gb(SL6PG) usually looks like this.Pic#2
...How ever, I did notice that the number "5423B382" doesn't match it's usual ---> "L"starting code ! (pic#2 number is L410A923)
So at this point, The heatspreader looks ok to me...But I agree with the rest of the chip being a possible P3 M .
