This was one of a hundred chips we pulled out today and I thought it might be an interesting talking point, then again I might be wrong....

Yep, just a standard socket adaptor board. I dont see them all that often now. They used to be very common years ago. 486 motherboards soon integrated extra jumpers to accomodate the explosion of 486 chips on the market. Try not to bend that voltage regulator too much.
