Ok, I know it's probably not worth it is my sister's machine hand neither she (nor I) have the bucks to buy a new pc. This is a Compaq presario 5345 that came with Win98 and an AMD K6 400 mhz processor. I upgraded the RAM to the max (384MB PC100 SDRAM) and also sucessfully upgraded the OS to Win XP Home Edition. Now I want to upgrade the processor as well (figure I can pick one up cheap on ebay). Compaq tells me that the maximum upgrade that the motherboard will accept a 475mhz K6-2 chip - which would only grant an increase in of 75 mhz in the clock speed - and hardly seems worth the effort.

Any advice on this would be GREATLY appreciated.

See if you can upgrade to K6-III processor. K6-III 450 will as fast as K6-2 550.

An upgrade would be to buy a "new" pc, I mean maybe to upgrade to a better equipment bought second hand off eaby or similar.

I'd advise for a K7 or Athlon/Duron under or around 1 Ghz, this way you could keep your RAM; the problem is if you have an ATX motherboard and case, otherwise you'd have to buy new ones (as cheap as 30€/35$), or again second hand. There are lots of cpu+mobo for really not much, used stuff but working.

If you keep your HD, RAM and case, maybe you can make it without a lot of cash.

If you really have no money to invest than go for that processor, 75 Mhz are always welcome, but it won't make an extraordinary change.

If the mobo will accept a 475 (5x95) it will also accept a 500 (5x100) if it has the 100MHz bus of course.

But I am with Genna, a K6-III 450 will be a good boost in speed,

overclock it, it will cost no money if you have a good heatsink+fan. Another thing I recommend you is to install windows 2000 (sp4), because windows xp consumes lot's of cpu if you don't configure it well
