|
|
Hi everyone !
I've got this quite unusual TI 486SXL2-50
There is a small board mounted on the CPU. What is it ?
This CPU seems to be rare. I browsed about ten collector's sites but I found only one picture at cpu-world. But that 486SXL2-50 don't have the board on it.
Does someone have a similar CPU with a board ? |

74HC4024D is a binary ripple counter
74VHC00 is a nand gate
Looks like a 6Mhz crystal with two stabilisation caps...
to me it looks like a external clock modification. 6Mhz divided down by the counter. Very interesting.
There is also a very large die cover.. strange chip. |

That would be called a "kludge."

Thanks for information !
And what does "SX" in "SXL2" mean ?
Is this CPU a upgrade to PGA 386SX board or is it a 486 without FPU ?

My TI 486SXL2-50 has a 386 pinout - 132-pin PGA - that's why the die cover appears so large.
I didn't realize this earlier, but it seems to exist two different TI 486SXL2-50 versoins - one with 132-pin PGA package for 386 and one with 168-pin PGA for 486 boards !
The 486SXL2-50 on Genna's page is described as 168-pin PGA
http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/80486/MANUF-Texas%20Instruments.html
I have also found this picture of 168-pin version
http://www.pc-atrium.de/Zu_den_CPUs/TI/TI80486/ti80486.html
And here are both versions together: http://www.cpu-cn.com/EN/Mfg.asp
(and then click "Texas Instruments" link) |

I have the version pictures at the top of the page. It was sold by Improve Technologies under the brand "Make-IT 486" and was sold as an upgrade for a 386 system. They also had a version (not sure if that was also a 486SXL as my box only contained the PGA version) that clipped on to a SMD 386 to upgrade that, and based on the box I have they should have both been in the same box. Within a couple of weeks I hope to have my next MAJOR update uploaded to my web site, and that will include scans of this chip plus the box it came in. _________________ My graphics card database can be found at http://www.gpuzoo.com.

Hi all
That`s mine version of TI 486 SXLC2 50Mhz, but this one is FPU. Any idea if FSB of this chip runs at 50Mhz or 2x25Mhz? is it 16 or 32bit chip?
Please advise
Thanks |

Long, long ago I had a nice HP machine sporting a 386SX-20. At some point I upgraded it using a Cyrix/Evergreen CPU module that would clip on top of the 386SX and replace it. The CPU has a whopping 1 KB of cache Perhaps is this the same class of chip?

I'm not sure where I got the original info from (all my info is at home, I'm not, but I have my website with me ready to upload at another library later...), but the info I have on my TI 386 page is:
TI486SXL has 8K unified, write—through L1 cache
TI486SXL2 has 8K unified, write—through L1 cache
TI486SXLC2 has 1K unified, write—through L1 cache
The SXL2 is the one contained in the box below _________________ My graphics card database can be found at http://www.gpuzoo.com.

".. fast and simple you can do in just minutes"
Must be Martian minutes. I dont remember anything taking "just minutes" with old pc's |

TI486SXLC2 has 8K L1 cache too.
Afak, SXLC are only available on QFP package, and I think this is the only difference with SXL2 (which is only available in PGA)
It seems that both PGA132 and PGA168 TI486 are based on the same core, made by TI (different from Cyrix one) and called "Potomac".
It is the TI486SLC that has only 1K L1 cache. _________________ Register on x86-guide.net to manage and share your collection on-line !
