|
|
I have a dell inspiron 8500 laptop and was wondering if I can upgrade the Intel Pentium 4M 2.4 GHz Processor with a new IntelŪ PentiumŪ processor Extreme Edition 965. If not, is there some other Intel processor that I can update to?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,

| 3. There is no way the heatsink could handle that! |

you can replace a p4-m with a socket 478 pentium 4 desktop cpu.that's right..but it's not possible to replace the pentium 4-m with a PEE 965 ...and it's nearly impossible to cool it with a notebook cooler...no way -.- |

Pentium 4 processors have features called "Thermal Monitor" (TM, Northwood and Prescott) and "Thermal Monitor 2" (TM2, Prescott). When the processor overheats then this feature eiher stops processor clock (TM) or throttles it down (TM2) for very short period of time. When the temperature drops the CPU is switched back to original processor frequency. If your heatsink/fan is not suitable for your CPU then this feature will be used more often. The end result for you is that CPU's performance will be worse. I don't know if you already hit that point when your CPU is running slower than it should. You can try to run banchmarks and compare results with other 2.6 GHz processors.
As for PEE 965 I agree with everybody else - laptop's heatsink won't handle that.
