Hi, Longish story which I'll try and keep short.

A computer my son has had for approx a year was going very slow recently ( again ) due to malware and probable viruses. I decided to re-format it again as it fixes prob straight away with no hastle. Anyway I noticed that the cpu detected was not 3000 as expected. I put this down to possible jumper position being wrong on the m.b. as when I bought it for him over e-bay the seller had overclocked it with a 2500 barton chip to make it look like a 3000. He then sent me the 3000 when i complained which I changed out ( without changing jumpers )
I checked jumper and I was correct . so I switched it from 400 mhz to 333 mhz as I have the chip referenced below.

Now the computer wont boot up for more than a second just long enough ( sometimes ) for the monitor green light to come on and then it shuts down.
I have tried moving the jumper back to the original place and it still does the same.
any ideas . have I fried the chip, or m.b. ?
also I noticed that there are no FID Jumpers installed, could this be anything to do with it
Im lost as unless Ive damaged something I dont understand why it wont boot up in the old or new jumper position.

HELP, Any ideas ?

Are you sure your CPU is Athlon XP 2500 ? Athlon 3000 was in 400 MHz FSB version too :

http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/K7/AMD-Athlon%20XP%203000%2B%20-%20AXDA3000DKV4E.html

Your mobo is working I'm sure you didn't fried it. I'm not sure now about CPU.

Look for "CMOS clear" jumper - in most cases it is near battery. If you will have problem with finding it then just put away battery for minimum 5 s.

It will restore all your BIOS settings to default.

BTW. Use now 333 MHz FSB on jumpers.

PS. Let us know what was the result.

Did you run it without HSF connected?

Meant to add, prior to this - according to my son the computer has required to be fully switched off
at the back to allow re-boot for some time , not sure if this is significant.
also - i still have the xp 2500 chip which was working before , would it be worthwhile re-setting cmos , jumpering for 2500, intstall 2500 and boot up ?

sorry , but just had a thought would the cpu shut down this quick if there was not enough grease on heat sink ?

Maybe a faulty power unit? If you can have a PSU from a friend to see if replacing it makes the system boot.

Takes a few minutes to verify, just another thing to check. Or maybe just try to unplug all the Hds and cdroms. I don't feel very confident with this one, but let's do it.

No, I test cpus for a few secs and they work good without any grease. At least 15-30 secs before going into protection mood or similar, though I always switched off before 30 secs.

dume, thanks , dont have a spare power unit, but will change out with my own from this pc,

It does seem strange that it stopped working when i messed with it , which points me more in the direction of something i have done, i.e. it aint the power supply, i.e. one minute its working , move some jumpers , switch on and doh !
what about measuring the power unit output as i have a multi - meter ?
cheers ac

Honestly I don't know, but a few specs should be written on the side of the psu.

Those are max load normally, but unless you have a draining video card you shouldn't have problems with wattage and amperes.

A 200-250 W should suffice, for POST.

On some Boards there is a specific power take off point for the CPU fan it should be clearly marked and experiance has shown me that it's not always the one nearest the CPU

Other Question have you cleaned off any old heat compond/pad and degreased BOTH the CPU and the botton of the Fan and replased the compound/pad ??

It Looks with the fan is stopping that the over heat protection cut off is coming in to play.
