I guess you're talking about this auction:

http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4123181556&category=1247

I think the C4040 (even soldered) with the SBC board and extra chips C4201, C4289 and others is worth more than C4040 CPU.

True. I'm curious to see how high this one goes.

Makes me wish I still had my 6 C4040s

willsmith grabbed it
he's been winning alot of these high dollare auctions
including $515 for a C4004
http://cgi6.ebay.com/ws1/eBayISAPI.dll?MfcISAPICommand=ViewBidItems&userid=willsmith.org&completed=1&sort=3&all=1&rows=25

$306 is not outta line for that chip atm. (I would figure it woulda went higher)

I won that C4040 with a bit of sniping. I'm totally amazed that 'thebossoffrance' didn't bid any higher or that nobody bid higher in the last day. I won at $306, his bid of $301, only $1 higher than the next lowest of $300, had been standing for over a day! I really expected some hot last second sniping action!
http://offer.ebay.com/ws3/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewBids&item=4124692703

BTW that other auction for a C4004 that went above $US500 - I didn't win that, I only bid up to $400 : http://offer.ebay.com/ws3/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewBids&item=3469937804

Anyway, I now have a 3101 Gold (but not gold/grey), a C4004 in gold + gold grey, and a C4040 now in gold as well as an 8008 and 8080 in gold. So not much else to get (I am concentrating on early collectibles from Intel since I think they have the most chance of retaining their value), although I am also interested in memory (1103) - seems few people focus on that so prices are lower. I missed a 1003 in gold some time back. I did win 2x D1103 but the seller (nrs1) never got back to me despite several emails : http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2789685329

I don't believe that, because Intel has always been a mass product. But we will see Very Happy

Its a hard call. Gold was at a very high price in the early 80s thus making scrapping of these CPUs very common.

Gold is at $400 an ounce now whiich is again quite high
and there are again large amounts of gold reclaim going on (note the 'bulk' auctions for chips on eBay)

Maybe because he bought another C4040 on a SBC board a week or two earlier. $306 is a good price for this chip.
