Originally, I was going to post this on the Socket 462, but may be this is a better place for it.

I've got a Fry's special with a Geode 1750 running XP Rro SP2. Recently, I got a Sempron 2800+ (Thoroughbred) and installed it. However, it only boots at 1.4V/1.6GHz. At POST, the CPU is scanned as an Athlon 1900+. When I load default settings in the BIOS, the CPU is correctly identified at POST, but blue screens immediately before the desktop is shown.

1) My BIOS is probably crippled because I can't set the voltage, even though the manual says I can. There's only a new BIOS of the 741GX-M on the ECS site. Any ideas on whether this would solve my issue?

2) Any ideas on how to "uncripple" this board?

3) Differences between a Geode 1750 (1.4GHz) and the Sempron 2800+. Which is better?

TIA

I don't have any experience with Geodes. It's an embedded processor, so I would think that Geode will run cooler and probably will be good for overclocking. Sempron should be faster.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geode_%28processor%29

133 fsb vs. 166 fsb, the sempron multiplier works with 166 fsb, so instead of 2800 you get 1900, because your bios sets the processor accordingly with multiplier and fsb to determine the cpu model's name. 2800 is real clock at 2000 mhz.

It's slower than it could go, change motherboard if you want to use the cpu or buy som pc2700 ram and see if you can overclock your system stable up to 333 (166*2). Don't overclock unless you really know what you are doing.

As for performance at 133 fsb the sempron runs at 133.33*12 =1600 mhz with 256k l2; geode runs at 1400 mhz 10.5*133.33 with 256k l2 cache.

Had a little screw up mistaking l2 cache with celerons... my bad.

Sempron is better than 1750, anyway, even at 133 fsb.

Wait for more input from other users.

The Sempron is better.That's fact

I think the Geode helps you to save energy Wink
and have a nice silent system, because it's possible to cool it passive.
