Great site. Keep up the good work.

I have an Acer Aspire T120c with a motherboard designated "Acer GM7 Socket A (aka socket) Sis741 Chipset". The PC came with a Sempron 3000+ preinstalled.

1. What is the most powerful CPU to which I can upgrade (presumably Athlon 64 XP type)?

2. When upgrading the CPU should one also upgrade the heatsink? If so,
a brand recommendation would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance...

Larry

according to you chipset, you should be able to use Athlon XP 3200+, but Sempron 3000+ is very similiar to a virtual Athlon XP 2700+, so you wouldnt feel much of a difference probably. These a very expensive for their performance. Heatsink can probably be kept.

Very useful to know.

Apparently not worthwhile with an XP 3200+, but would the chipset accept (say) an Athlon 64 4000+ ?

..eurm...dunno bout u guys, but the Athlon XP3200+ is a much better chip then a Sempron 3000.... o.0

So to me the choice is pretty obvious.

Sempron 300+ is using Barton core with 2000 Mhz and FSB 166, Athlon XP # 2600+: 1.917 MHz
2800+: 2.083 MHz
