I can't/won't comment on how common the SC1200 is (I'm never sure when it comes to more modern chips...), but it is NOT an ES. The "ES" at the end of the bottom line of text is nothing other than part of the lot code.

The second chip has the old logo, which seems to be less common than the later logo, but I wouldn't call it rare.

RARE is a term used far too often by some sellers in order to dupe unsuspecting newer collectors into paying higher prices

i think this SC1200 is an ES
refer to http://www.cpuphotolibrary.com/cat520.htm?page=3
coding of the normal SC1200,2200.3200 - the print start with VSxxxxx
have 7 character
and this SC1200 has 9 character
therefore the ES is an engineering sample
and maybe someone could tell us what the "VS34567" stand for
=================================
and there are some discussion months ago tring to prove another NS chip is not engineering sample
http://www.cpu-world.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6724&highlight=ns486
http://www.cpu-world.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5891&highlight=ns486

though i don't have that NS486SXF-25 ESxxxx in collection yet
i still have a feeling that it may be an ES
because

1st
the previous discussion of the NS486 is comparing
2 different chips
NS486SXF-25 vs NS486SXL-25
it is not fair

2nd
just as the case of pentium ES

some pentium ES will
have
----------
Qxxx ES
intel confidential
-------------
and some pentium ES will
only have
------------
Qxxx ES
------------

As a Q spec pentium will not become not-engineering-sample just because there is a pentium with
intel confidential
or just because there are intel chips with "sample" printed

, i dont think conclusion could be make like
---------------
NS486-SXF ESxxxxxx
---------------
is not an engineering sample
just because
someone have a
----------
NS486-SXL ESxxxxxx
sample
----------

it is still possible that in the NS coding system the ES is stand for engineering sample

the only way is to find out a document of NS486 coding
and before that i still think it is an ES
because
3rd
the NS486 is a modern chip (they are not Z80 time chip)
when the company design their coding system
they would like to avoid some word like "ES" ,"CS" if the chip is not a sample
because in the late 90 , everyone knew what ES and CS possible stand for
and because they are selling normal and stable chip, not selling unstable chip for test
and no "normal" company will buy possible "unstable" chip to build and sell possible "unstable" machine
it is not wise to make such confusion for their future customer
