I was surprised when I took the heatsink off to find a Intel cpu underneath. I have never seen this type of setup before, its an interesting setup. How common is it?

It is probably a PC card called SunPCi that enables you to run x86 apps in a Sun workstation. I had a colleague at work using that i his Sun Ultra5 workstation. The card was running a AMD-K6-2 400. Basically its a complete PC that uses the workstation disk, display and mouse/keyboard.

Some googling suggests that your card is a SunPCi II.

Edit: About rarity it seems like there has been a I, II and III version ranging from K6-2 300 to Athlon XP 1600+ so it must have been rather popular since the processors range over a couple of years.
