Just installed a massive 5900Ultra inside of a good-rated system (P4 3.2 with 2GB and a 500W supply)... Powered on, no fans... Waited maybe 3 seconds, and a PLUME of thick grey smoke was released! I immediatlky stepped on the power strip, turning it off, and cleared out the smoke...
Heres the strange part: I removed the card, and sat it aside. I examined the motherboard, found NO problems what-so-ever. I used another AGP card, and it worked fine. No problems.
I figured I shorted out my awesome card. I examine it: No damage!
I went home, and plugged the card into another PC... A tester The card worked fine!!
WHAT HAPPEN????
My only clue: The motherboard is the only item which reeks of dead electronics. It does work fine, though. I burned it in overnight (under observation) and no problems were noted. |

Maybe that was Jin I remember similar situation from about 7 years ago. We had computer party at house and my friend was repairing his notebook. He assembled it in dark room and when he turned on there appeared a black smoke. I saw his sad face but notebook was still alive
Later with same notebook ... he was changing something again and when he moved it from desk to desk he bang it a little. After that there was a little snap and I saw big violet smoke. We was sure about that notebook is now dead but it was still working !! Damn good Compaq Presario !!! _________________ Visit ABC CPU - Virtual CPU Museum. |
